About

Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars - The Director's Cut is a 2009 enhanced remake of Revolution Software's classic 1996 point-and-click adventure. Players guide American tourist George Stobbart and now-playable French journalist Nico Collard as they unravel a murder mystery tied to a modern-day conspiracy surrounding the Knights Templar across locations in Paris and beyond. The Director's Cut adds new puzzles, fully repainted hand-drawn artwork, and additional story sequences centered on Nico. It was well received as a definitive version of a landmark adventure game and was nominated for Best Story at the 2009 British Academy Video Games Awards.

⚙ Setup notes

Delisted: Removed from Steam Nov 2024 (appid 57640) when the 'Reforged' remake replaced it; it's a custom 2D point-and-click adventure (Revolution Software).

Proton: ProtonDB platinum and it was Steam Deck Verified, so it runs out of the box on the Deck with proton_experimental. Launcher binary is bs1dc.exe in the install folder.

DRM: No GFWL/SecuROM DRM (plain Steam wrapper, ships openal32.dll).

Fix: Most common issue is no-launch/silent audio because OpenAL isn't installed (the game ships oalinst.exe but doesn't auto-run it) — install the openal winetricks verb, or run oalinst.exe from the game folder inside the prefix. If the game launches but has no sound, the documented workaround is a Steam launch option picking a sound backend, e.g. --sounddevice "Generic Hardware" (other values: "DirectSound Software", "Generic Software", "MMSYSTEM").

Controller: Pointer-driven gameplay maps cleanly to the right trackpad as a mouse; the Verified default layout works, no custom hack needed.

Install: deckport only configures the prefix; it never bundles or links the game files.

The one thing to know

Supply your own copy. deckport links nothing.

Delisted: Removed from Steam Nov 2024 in favor of the 'Reforged' remake; this is the original 2009 Director's Cut (appid 57640).

Proton: ProtonDB platinum and previously Steam Deck Verified, so community reports confirm it runs on Deck under proton_experimental. Launcher is bs1dc.exe.

Fix: If the game won't start, install OpenAL (openal winetricks verb, or run oalinst.exe from the install folder inside the prefix). If it launches but has no sound, set a Steam launch option such as --sounddevice "Generic Hardware".

Controller: Single-player point-and-click; right trackpad as mouse with the default Verified layout is plenty, no controller hack required.

Community guides

Get the artwork

deckport never hosts game images. Open this game on SteamGridDB, pick the cover / hero / logo / icon you like, and drop them into the game folder under .deckport-art/ before you push it to the Deck. The importer files them under the right names automatically.

Run it on your Deck

Two files: the one-time importer (deckport.py) in your Deck's home folder, and this game's install helper. Copy the game into ~/Games and run the helper with Steam closed — it writes the recipe (binary, launch options, Proton version) and registers the shortcut with artwork.
