About

Castlevania II: Simon's Quest - Revamped is a free fan remake of the notoriously cryptic NES Castlevania II that addresses the original's major pain points. It fixes the infamous bad hints and broken day/night cycle, while adding enhanced graphics and quality-of-life improvements. Completely standalone — no Konami files required. This is a different project from Castlevania Chronicles II: Simon's Quest, developed by a separate fan team.

⚙ Setup notes

GameMaker Studio fan game (ships an exe + data.win, e.g. from the v2.3.5 'Simons Quest Revamped_2_3_5.zip'). Exact exe name varies by release — confirm it against the extracted folder and point [launch].binary at the actual GameMaker runner exe. GameMaker titles run well under Proton/GE-Proton; use Steam Input for the gamepad if buttons aren't picked up natively. Free standalone release — no original NES files required. This is a separate fan project from Castlevania Chronicles II: Simon's Quest.

The one thing to know

Not on Steam, so there is no ProtonDB tier — it's a free standalone GameMaker fan game (latest v2.3.5). As a GameMaker title it generally runs well under Proton/GE-Proton, but verify on-device. No Konami/NES files needed. Different from the Castlevania Chronicles II project (separate fan team). Fixes original Simon's Quest's cryptic hints and broken day/night cycle. Binary name varies by release — set [launch].binary to the actual exe in the extracted folder.

Community guides

Write-ups and threads from people who got this (or a similar) game running. deckport links to them — it doesn't reproduce them.

Get the artwork

deckport never hosts game images. Open this game on SteamGridDB, pick the cover / hero / logo / icon you like, and drop them into the game folder under .deckport-art/ before you push it to the Deck. The importer files them under the right names automatically.

Run it on your Deck

Two files: the one-time importer (deckport.py) in your Deck's home folder, and this game's install helper. Copy the game into ~/Games and run the helper with Steam closed — it writes the recipe (binary, launch options, Proton version) and registers the shortcut with artwork.
