About
Devil May Cry 4 is the fourth main entry in Capcom's stylish action series, built on the studio's MT Framework engine and originally released for PC in 2008 under the Games for Windows brand. It introduces newcomer Nero alongside series icon Dante, mixing fast combo-driven sword-and-gun combat with a flashy style-rating system. The original release (Steam appid 45700) was delisted from Steam on 2024-01-31, superseded by the still-sold Special Edition (appid 329050). It is well regarded for its tight combat despite criticism of backtracking and reused level layouts.

⚙ Setup notes
Game: Original Devil May Cry 4 (Steam appid 45700), delisted from Steam on 2024-01-31. ProtonDB tier gold (18 reports, moderate confidence; best individual reports reach platinum) — community reports playing through start to finish on Proton/Deck.
Executables: The title ships a front-end launcher (DMC4Launcher.exe) plus two game builds, DevilMayCry4_DX9.exe and DevilMayCry4_DX10.exe. Point the prefix at the DX9 build (DevilMayCry4_DX9.exe) — it is the most Proton-friendly; the DX10 build is less stable.
Proton / known fix: Use a recent GE-Proton build. The most common issue is that the engine's bundled FMV cutscenes (intro / tutorial videos) play black or with no audio under stock Valve Proton; switching to GE-Proton (which ships the extra media codecs) restores them. proton_experimental also works for most users.
DRM: This is a 'Games for Windows' branded title, but the Steam release has no Games for Windows Live (GFWL) integration — there is no GFWL sign-in or activation step to bypass. (The original 2008 retail disc used SecuROM; that does not apply to the Steam copy.)
Display: First launch opens a config/benchmark front-end; pick 1280x800 (16:10) or 1920x1080, Fullscreen, then start the game.
Controller: Native Xbox-style gamepad support, so the default Steam Input gamepad layout works out of the box.
Install: deckport only configures the prefix; it never bundles or links the game files.
The one thing to know
Supply your own copy. deckport links nothing.
Delisting: Original DMC4 was delisted from Steam on 2024-01-31, so it is no longer purchasable there (existing owners keep it in their library). This recipe is for the original (appid 45700), not the still-sold Special Edition (appid 329050).
Status: ProtonDB gold (18 reports, best reaching platinum); community reports full playthroughs on Proton/Deck, but this specific recipe is not yet Deck-verified.
Cutscenes: The most common problem is black/silent intro and tutorial FMV videos on stock Valve Proton — fix by switching the title to GE-Proton, which bundles the needed media codecs.
Executable: Point the prefix at DevilMayCry4_DX9.exe (the launcher is DMC4Launcher.exe); the DX10 build (DevilMayCry4_DX10.exe) can be flaky under Proton.
DRM: No Games for Windows Live — 'Games for Windows' here is branding only, so there is no GFWL sign-in to bypass on the Steam copy.
Controller: Native controller support; the default Steam Input gamepad layout works.
Modes: Single-player only, so no server concerns.

Get the artwork
deckport never hosts game images. Open this game on SteamGridDB, pick
the cover / hero / logo / icon you like, and drop them into the
game folder under .deckport-art/ before you push it to the
Deck. The importer files them under the right names automatically.
Run it on your Deck
Two files: the one-time importer (deckport.py) in your
Deck's home folder, and this game's install helper. Copy the game
into ~/Games and run the helper with Steam closed — it
writes the recipe (binary, launch options, Proton version)
and registers the shortcut with artwork.
