About
Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis (Blue Tongue Entertainment/Vivendi, 2003)
is a beloved theme park builder set in the Jurassic Park universe — task the player with
constructing a functioning dinosaur park, managing dinosaur health, and keeping visitors
alive. Never digitally re-released due to fragmented IP rights, it remains disc-only but
runs on Steam Deck via Proton Experimental at just 7W TDP, making it an excellent battery-
friendly classic for Deck play.

⚙ Setup notes
Overview
Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis (2003) never received a digital release —
it is not on Steam or GOG (only a GOG community wishlist exists). Publisher
Vivendi/Universal Games is defunct and the IP rights are fragmented, so this
remains a disc/ISO-only title. Supply your own copy from an original retail
disc or a personal disc image.
The launcher executable is SimJP.exe, found under the install tree atProgram Files (x86)/Universal Interactive/Blue Tongue Software/Jurassic Park.
Operation Genesis/JPOG/SimJP.exe
The game has been confirmed running on Steam Deck by SteamDeckHQ
(Classics on Deck #11). Their working setup used Lutris with a Wine-GE 8-26
runner and DXVK pinned to 2.3.1 (newer DXVK versions did not work). If you
add it as a Non-Steam game with Proton Experimental instead, expect more
manual tinkering; the Lutris route is the documented happy path.
Installation
1. Install JPOG from your disc/ISO (run Setup.exe). If a DirectX 8 install is
offered, skip it — DXVK handles Direct3D.
2. Add the game in Lutris (Search Lutris Website for Installers → "Operation
Genesis"), or add SimJP.exe as a Non-Steam game and force a compatibility
tool in Properties → Compatibility.
3. If using Lutris, set the runner's DXVK version to 2.3.1.
Disc check / SafeDisc DRM
The retail release is protected by SafeDisc, whose kernel driver was removed
from Windows 10+ and is absent under Wine/Proton, so the unpatched SimJP.exe
will fail its disc check on the Deck. PCGamingWiki documents a community
disc-check fix (a replacement SimJP.exe) that removes the SafeDisc disc
requirement — consult the PCGamingWiki page (linked below) for the current
recommended file. Use only methods from PCGamingWiki; do not use
third-party pirate sites.
Widescreen / Resolution
JPOG uses an Options.ini file for display configuration.
To set the native Steam Deck resolution (1280x800):
1. Locate Options.ini in the game install directory (or create it).
2. Set the following values:
[Display]
ScreenWidth=1280
ScreenHeight=800
Fullscreen=1
If Options.ini is not present, the game defaults to 800x600 — always
create/edit it before first launch.
Performance
Very light workload for the Deck GPU.
Recommended settings:
TDP limit: 7W
GPU clock: 800 MHz
Framerate target: 90fps (the engine runs cleanly at high framerates)
Display resolution: 1280x800
Battery life: ~6h on OLED Deck at these settings.
Minor camera stutter can occur when panning quickly over large terrain
sections with many dinosaurs — this is an original engine limitation,
not a Proton issue.
Controller / Input
JPOG has NO native gamepad support — it is mouse + keyboard only, so the Deck
must drive a virtual mouse/keyboard via Steam Input (or, in Lutris, the
"Keyboard (WASD) + Mouse" community template). Plan on using a touchpad/gyro
for the mouse cursor.
Recommended Steam Input layout:
- Right stick → mouse camera pan
- Left stick → WASD camera movement
- Gyro → fine camera rotation (gyro-on-right-touchpad)
- Right trigger → left mouse (select / place)
- Left trigger → right mouse (context menu / cancel)
- A → confirm / interact
- B → cancel
- Y → open dinosaur viewer
- Start → pause menu
Search community layouts for "Jurassic Park Operation Genesis" — layouts
tuned for the Deck touchpads and gyro exist.
Mod Community
There is no official standalone remake, but a still-active modding community on
ModDB has produced dinosaur expansions, content packs, and patches (e.g.
x1mpressed's expanded JPOG, JPOG: The Forgotten, Documentaries Edition). These
install into the game directory and do not require any additional Wine
configuration beyond the base setup. See the ModDB JPOG page (linked below).
Known Issues
- Intro Vivendi logo video may fail to play; press Escape or Space to skip.
- Very occasional crash-to-desktop when loading certain visitor feedback
pop-ups; this is an original game bug reproducible on Windows as well.
- The in-game resolution picker may not list 1280x800 — set it via
Options.ini instead of the in-game menu.
The one thing to know
- Launcher is SimJP.exe (not "JPOG.exe") under .../Blue Tongue Software/Jurassic Park
Operation Genesis/JPOG/.
- Supply your own copy — disc or personal disc image only; no legal digital storefront exists
(not on Steam or GOG).
- SafeDisc DRM: the disc check fails under Wine/Proton (and on Windows 10+), so a PCGamingWiki
disc-check fix (replacement SimJP.exe) is required for disc-free operation. Use only methods
documented on PCGamingWiki.
- SteamDeckHQ's verified path is Lutris with Wine-GE 8-26 and DXVK pinned to 2.3.1; newer DXVK
builds did not work. There is no Steam/ProtonDB entry, so protondb_tier is left blank.
- No native controller support — mouse + keyboard only; map a virtual mouse via Steam Input.
- Resolution MUST be set via Options.ini before first launch — the in-game picker will not
list 1280x800 and will default to 800x600.
- Minor camera stutter when panning quickly over large dino-populated areas is an engine limit,
not a Proton bug — cannot be fixed by tweaking settings.
- Intro logo video may not play under Proton; press Escape or Space to skip past it.
- Crash-to-desktop on certain visitor feedback pop-ups is a known original game bug (reproducible
on Windows); save frequently.

Get the artwork
deckport never hosts game images. Open this game on SteamGridDB, pick
the cover / hero / logo / icon you like, and drop them into the
game folder under .deckport-art/ before you push it to the
Deck. The importer files them under the right names automatically.
Run it on your Deck
Two files: the one-time importer (deckport.py) in your
Deck's home folder, and this game's install helper. Copy the game
into ~/Games and run the helper with Steam closed — it
writes the recipe (binary, launch options, Proton version)
and registers the shortcut with artwork.
