About
Mega Man X8 16-bit is a free fan demake that reimagines Capcom's 2004 PlayStation 2 game Mega Man X8 in a 16-bit SNES style, aiming to recapture the feel of the first three Mega Man X titles. It was created by a single developer, Alysson da Paz, using the Godot Engine 3.5, along with Aseprite, Tiled and Audacity, and was released as part of the Sonic Amateur Game Expo 2024 (SAGE 2024).
The game is fully playable from start to finish with X as the sole playable character, with Zero, Axl and the Navigators intentionally left out to keep the project low in scope. As an unofficial, non-commercial fan project not affiliated with Capcom, it is distributed for free rather than sold.

⚙ Setup notes
What it is: A free fan 'demake' of Mega Man X8 by Alysson da Paz (Alones) — the PS2 game reimagined in 16-bit pixel art with widescreen + 60 FPS. Single playable character (X). v1.0 released 2024-09-07.
Engine: Built in Godot 3.5, exported as a single self-contained Windows .exe (the game data .pck is embedded — no extra files to supply).
Proton: Reported to run flawlessly on Deck with Proton Experimental; GE-Proton also works. Holds a locked 60/90 FPS even with the GPU down-clocked. No winetricks needed.
Controller: Native gamepad support with in-game button remapping — works as a normal controller, no Steam Input layout required. A few users hit quirks with the D-pad on certain pads; remapping in the options menu resolves it.
Install: Download the .exe from the dev's official release, then in Desktop mode add it as a Non-Steam Game and force Proton Experimental in Properties > Compatibility. It is a standalone executable, not a normal-installer; just point Steam at the .exe.
The one thing to know
Supply your own copy: Free fan game (not affiliated with Capcom) — download it from the author's official release (Sonic Fan Games HQ / GitHub). It is a free, non-commercial fan project.
Binary: Mega Man X8 16-bit 1.0.0.8.exe (v1.0.0.8). The filename embeds the version, so a newer build may differ — point the launcher at the actual .exe in the download.
Standalone: Self-contained Godot export — no installer, no separate data files to copy. Add the .exe directly as a Non-Steam Game.

Get the artwork
deckport never hosts game images. Open this game on SteamGridDB, pick
the cover / hero / logo / icon you like, and drop them into the
game folder under .deckport-art/ before you push it to the
Deck. The importer files them under the right names automatically.
Run it on your Deck
Two files: the one-time importer (deckport.py) in your
Deck's home folder, and this game's install helper. Copy the game
into ~/Games and run the helper with Steam closed — it
writes the recipe (binary, launch options, Proton version)
and registers the shortcut with artwork.
