About
Shift 2 Unleashed (also branded Need for Speed: Shift 2 Unleashed) is the seventeenth Need for Speed title and a direct sequel to Need for Speed: Shift, built by Slightly Mad Studios. It is a simulation-leaning racer noted for its cockpit-mounted helmet camera and visceral first-person crash effects, covering road, circuit, and drift events with licensed cars and real-world tracks.
The game was removed from Steam on 2021-05-31 and its online services were retired on 2021-08-31, but offline single-player remains playable. Its TAGES SolidShield DRM and former EA online activation can complicate launching a stock retail copy.

⚙ Setup notes
Game: 2011 Slightly Mad Studios / EA sim-style racer (Steam appid 47920, delisted 2021-05-31). Main exe is shift2u.exe.
Proton: Runs under Proton; GE-Proton recommended for the PhysX/older-EA stack.
DRM: Game shipped with TAGES SolidShield DRM tied to EA online activation servers that are now defunct — a clean offline-capable executable is required or the game will fail activation; this is a copy/DRM issue, not a Proton issue.
Install: Install bundled PhysX (9.10.0513), DirectX, and vcredist_x86 redistributables into the prefix (protontricks physx d3dx9 vcrun2008).
Fix: If it fails to launch, GE-Proton plus those redists usually resolves it.
Controller: Gamepad support works for driving and menu navigation, so the Deck's built-in controls are usable without a custom Steam Input layout. Note two quirks reported by players: the menus keep showing keyboard button prompts even on a pad, and the pad has noticeable input lag/sensitivity out of the box — both are cosmetic/tunable, not blockers (lag is improved by setting DampeningEnabled to 0 in vehicleset_pc_custom_pad.xml and reselecting the in-game *Custom* control scheme).
The one thing to know
Supply your own copy: Delisted 2021-05-31 (Steam appid 47920) — config only, no links.
DRM: The original DRM (TAGES SolidShield) phoned home to EA activation servers that no longer exist, so a stock retail/Steam install may refuse to launch on Deck; a copy that does not require online re-activation is needed.
Proton: Use GE-Proton.
Install: Install PhysX 9.10.0513, DirectX, and vcredist_x86 into the prefix; add shift2u.exe to a clean launch (compatibility tweaks like 'run as admin' are Windows-only and not needed under Proton).
Controller: Gamepad works for menus and driving without a custom Steam Input layout, but menus show keyboard prompts and the pad has input lag until you set DampeningEnabled=0 in vehicleset_pc_custom_pad.xml.
Tier: Estimated gold pending Deck retest.

Get the artwork
deckport never hosts game images. Open this game on SteamGridDB, pick
the cover / hero / logo / icon you like, and drop them into the
game folder under .deckport-art/ before you push it to the
Deck. The importer files them under the right names automatically.
Run it on your Deck
Two files: the one-time importer (deckport.py) in your
Deck's home folder, and this game's install helper. Copy the game
into ~/Games and run the helper with Steam closed — it
writes the recipe (binary, launch options, Proton version)
and registers the shortcut with artwork.
