About

Observer (stylized >observer_) is a first-person psychological horror adventure from Bloober Team, set in a cyberpunk rendition of 2084 Krakow ravaged by a digital plague. You play Daniel Lazarski, a neural detective who hacks into the minds of suspects and corpses to investigate crimes, with the late Rutger Hauer voicing the lead.

Built on Unreal Engine 4, it received generally favorable reviews for its dense cyberpunk atmosphere and won Best Setting in Game Informer's 2017 Adventure Game of the Year Awards. The original 2017 build was delisted from Steam after being replaced by the 2020 remake Observer: System Redux.

⚙ Setup notes

Delisted: Delisted Steam game (appid 514900), the original >observer_ — replaced on the store by Observer: System Redux (1386900), so the 2017 build is no longer sold.

DRM: Unreal Engine 4 (4.15.3) single-player horror, no DRM beyond Steam and no GFWL.

Proton: Reported to run well on Deck — ProtonDB overall platinum (moderate confidence, ~14 reports; recent reports trend gold). Use GE-Proton or proton_experimental; no winetricks needed.

Fix: Top-level Observer.exe is the UE4 launcher — if it stalls, point the launch at Observer/Binaries/Win64/Observer-Win64-Shipping.exe directly.

Controller: Native UE4 gamepad support, so the Steam Deck controls work out of the box.

Install: deckport only configures the prefix; it never bundles or links the game files.

The one thing to know

Supply your own copy: deckport links nothing.

Delisted: Original >observer_ (2017), delisted in favor of Observer: System Redux (1386900).

Online: Single-player UE4 horror with no online component, so nothing to worry about server-side.

Deck: ProtonDB platinum and full native controller support, so it should be a clean Deck experience on GE-Proton/experimental.

NEEDS-TEST: based on ProtonDB community reports, not yet confirmed on this exact recipe.

Fix: If the top-level Observer.exe doesn't launch, target Observer/Binaries/Win64/Observer-Win64-Shipping.exe.

Get the artwork

deckport never hosts game images. Open this game on SteamGridDB, pick the cover / hero / logo / icon you like, and drop them into the game folder under .deckport-art/ before you push it to the Deck. The importer files them under the right names automatically.

Run it on your Deck

Two files: the one-time importer (deckport.py) in your Deck's home folder, and this game's install helper. Copy the game into ~/Games and run the helper with Steam closed — it writes the recipe (binary, launch options, Proton version) and registers the shortcut with artwork.
