About

Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie is a 2005 tie-in to the King Kong film, developed by Ubisoft Montpellier under director Michel Ancel in collaboration with Peter Jackson. It splits play between near-HUD-less first-person survival sequences as journalist Jack Driscoll on Skull Island and third-person rampage sections controlling Kong.

Built on Ubisoft's Jade engine, it was widely praised for its cinematic presentation and minimal-interface design and is often cited as one of the best movie tie-in games. The PC version was later delisted as the film license lapsed.

⚙ Setup notes

Game: 2005 Ubisoft Montpellier movie tie-in (Jade engine). Steam appid 209910, now delisted (film license) — supply your own copy.

DRM: The original release ships StarForce 3 DRM, which does NOT run under Proton on its own.

Fix: Apply WIFIDarthMaul's Signature Edition Fix first: it strips the StarForce driver dependency and fixes the King Kong not properly installed error, and ships a King Kong.bat launcher.

Install: On Deck (Desktop Mode), add that King Kong.bat as a non-Steam game, then force GE-Proton (or proton_experimental) in its compatibility settings.

Display: Add ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix — copy the KingKong.WidescreenFix ASI/files into the game dir and overwrite — for correct aspect ratio, HUD/FMV scaling and a built-in frame-limiter (InitFramelimit) that avoids the high-framerate run-speed bug.

Controller: The game's own gamepad handling is rough (reports of a black screen with some Xbox pads) and there is no in-game way to swap between the Jack and Kong control sets. Use the fix author's Steam Input Community Layout ("Modernized Control Layout") — it maps the left touchpad-click to swap between Jack & Kong. Apply it from the controller settings rather than relying on native input.

The one thing to know

Supply your own copy: Delisted (film license, appid 209910) — configuration only.

DRM: The StarForce 3 DRM on the Signature/Standard Edition will NOT launch under Proton until you apply WIFIDarthMaul's Signature Edition Fix (it removes the StarForce dependency and fixes the directory-detection error).

Install: Add the bundled King Kong.bat as a non-Steam game and force GE-Proton.

Display: Add ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix and use its built-in frame-limiter to avoid the high-framerate speed-up bug.

Controller: Native gamepad handling is unreliable (black-screen reports with some Xbox pads, and no in-game Jack/Kong control-swap). Apply the fix author's Steam Input Community Layout instead of relying on native input.

Unverified: ProtonDB tier inferred from community reports, not yet Deck-verified — confirm on hardware.

Get the artwork

deckport never hosts game images. Open this game on SteamGridDB, pick the cover / hero / logo / icon you like, and drop them into the game folder under .deckport-art/ before you push it to the Deck. The importer files them under the right names automatically.

Run it on your Deck

Two files: the one-time importer (deckport.py) in your Deck's home folder, and this game's install helper. Copy the game into ~/Games and run the helper with Steam closed — it writes the recipe (binary, launch options, Proton version) and registers the shortcut with artwork.
