About

Scourge of Armagon is the first official expansion pack for id Software's Quake, developed by Hipnotic Software and published by Activision in 1997. It adds three new episodes built on Quake's id Tech engine, along with new enemies, bosses, weapons such as the Mjolnir hammer and proximity-mine laser cannon, and environmental hazards. Well received as a substantial follow-up to the original game, it was later delisted as a standalone purchase when id folded the classic mission packs into the Quake Enhanced/Remastered release.

⚙ Setup notes

Add-on: This is the hipnotic add-on for classic Quake, not a standalone exe — it needs a Quake install and is launched with -hipnotic.

DRM: Delisted standalone Steam game (appid 9040, purchase disabled Aug 2021 when id rolled the mission packs into Quake Enhanced/Remastered). No GFWL or DRM.

Proton: ProtonDB platinum. The original Steam build ships an outdated GLQuake/Winquake; it boots fine under Proton (use GE-Proton or proton_experimental).

Fix: For a clean Deck experience, drop a modern source port (QuakeSpasm/vkQuake) into the Quake folder and point the binary at it, launching with -hipnotic. The Steam-bundled Armagon soundtrack is poorly ripped — modern ports + the music/ folder fix that.

Controller: The original Steam-bundled WinQuake.exe has no native gamepad support, so use a Steam Input keyboard/mouse layout (right pad = mouselook, face buttons mapped to move/fire) — plays great and is Deck-friendly. Note: if you swap to a modern port, the QuakeSpasm SDL2 build (quakespasm-sdl2) and vkQuake do have native XInput gamepad support out of the box.

Install: deckport only configures the prefix; it never bundles or links the game files.

The one thing to know

Supply your own copy. deckport links nothing.

Add-on, not standalone: It requires a Quake install and the -hipnotic launch arg, and binary points at the Quake launcher (swap to QuakeSpasm/vkQuake for best results and to fix the badly-ripped Steam soundtrack via a music/ folder).

Delisted: Delisted standalone (appid 9040) — superseded by Quake Enhanced/Remastered, which already includes this mission pack and is Deck Verified; this recipe targets the classic standalone build.

Status: ProtonDB platinum for classic Quake; the standalone Scourge entry has thin direct reports, so status is needs-test until confirmed on a Deck.

DRM: No GFWL/DRM.

Controller: The original bundled WinQuake.exe has no native controller support — use a Steam Input keyboard/mouse layout (works well on Deck). Modern ports (QuakeSpasm SDL2 build, vkQuake) add native XInput gamepad support if you swap the binary.

Multiplayer: Single-player, so no server concerns.

Get the artwork

deckport never hosts game images. Open this game on SteamGridDB, pick the cover / hero / logo / icon you like, and drop them into the game folder under .deckport-art/ before you push it to the Deck. The importer files them under the right names automatically.

Run it on your Deck

Two files: the one-time importer (deckport.py) in your Deck's home folder, and this game's install helper. Copy the game into ~/Games and run the helper with Steam closed — it writes the recipe (binary, launch options, Proton version) and registers the shortcut with artwork.
