REKKR

Native Linux First-person shooter (Viking/Norse fantasy IWAD — standalone) 2018; standalone IWAD version free on manbitesshark.org gzdoom
Does it run on your Deck?

About

REKKR is a Viking and Celtic fantasy total conversion distributed as its own standalone IWAD, meaning it requires no Doom or other commercial game whatsoever. The free standalone version offers 3 episodes (E1–E3) plus separate bonus maps, with completely original monster designs, weapons, music, and atmosphere built on the Doom engine. The base game is entirely free via download from manbitesshark.org. A separate commercial release, REKKR: Sunken Land (Steam/GOG/itch.io), reworks the project as a standalone game bundled with GZDoom and adds a fourth canonical story episode (plus the free VR-3KKR challenge maps). Also compatible with Chocolate Doom for players who prefer a faithful retro rendering path.

⚙ Setup notes

Install: GZDoom is installed via Flatpak: flatpak install flathub org.zdoom.GZDoom.

IWAD: Download the free standalone zip from manbitesshark.org and drop REKKRSA.iwad into ~/.var/app/org.zdoom.GZDoom/.config/gzdoom (the GZDoom Flatpak config dir). Because REKKR is its own IWAD (not a mod), it is passed via -iwad rather than -file — no separate Doom WAD is needed. The standalone zip also bundles a copy of Chocolate Doom and a launch script.

Controller: GZDeck (github.com/flegald/GZDeck) is a controller-friendly launcher for GZDoom games in Steam Game Mode. As a non-Steam game it needs --no-sandbox as a launch argument; place IWADs in ~/.var/app/org.zdoom.GZDoom/.config/gzdoom.

Alternative: Also playable in Chocolate Doom for a more faithful retro rendering path.

The one thing to know

Completely standalone: REKKRSA.iwad IS the game, no Doom or other IWAD required. Download the free standalone zip from manbitesshark.org and drop REKKRSA.iwad into ~/.var/app/org.zdoom.GZDoom/.config/gzdoom.

Launch: Pass it via -iwad (not -file) since it is an IWAD, not a mod PK3.

Separate commercial release: REKKR: Sunken Land is a separate paid game (Steam/GOG/itch.io), not DLC for this free IWAD — it ships its own bundled GZDoom and adds a fourth canonical story episode.

Controller: Use GZDeck (github.com/flegald/GZDeck) for a Game Mode-friendly launcher; it needs --no-sandbox as a launch argument when added as a non-Steam game.

Alternative: Also playable in Chocolate Doom for a more faithful retro experience.

Get the artwork

deckport never hosts game images. Open this game on SteamGridDB, pick the cover / hero / logo / icon you like, and drop them into the game folder under .deckport-art/ before you push it to the Deck. The importer files them under the right names automatically.

Run it on your Deck

Two files: the one-time importer (deckport.py) in your Deck's home folder, and this game's install helper. Copy the game into ~/Games and run the helper with Steam closed — it writes the recipe (binary, launch options) and registers the shortcut with artwork.
