About

Residentvania is a free fan game that reimagines Resident Evil Village as a 2D demake in the style of the original NES Castlevania. Protagonist Ethan Winters fights through a pixel-art version of Lady Dimitrescu's castle, blending the first level of Castlevania with the Castle Dimitrescu section of RE: Village.

Built in GameMaker by solo developer OcO over roughly two months with custom-made assets, it released in October 2021 and earned wide coverage for its inventive crossover concept. As an unofficial Capcom/Konami mash-up it is distributed for free and was never sold commercially.

⚙ Setup notes

About: Free fan mash-up of Resident Evil Village and the original NES Castlevania by OcO (~5-10 min, 33MB).

Install: GameMaker Windows build distributed as Re8.zipextract it and point Steam at the .exe inside (named Re8.exe / project export).

Proton: GameMaker games run extremely well under Proton. GE-Proton or proton_experimental both work; latest stable Proton is fine.

DRM: No DRM/GFWL/installer.

Controller: The itch.io page lists an Xbox-pad mapping — D-Pad move, A jump, X knife, Y shoot (keyboard: WASD, Space jump, K knife, L shoot). In practice gamepad input is unreliable: a commenter reported neither an Xbox nor a PS4 pad did anything, and the dev never confirmed working pad support. Plan on a Steam Input keyboard layout mapping the Deck face buttons to WASD/Space/K/L (treat native pad as a bonus, not a given).

The one thing to know

Supply your own copy: Free fan game (not Capcom/Konami), itch.io only — never on Steam, so add as a Non-Steam shortcut.

Install: Add via Add a Game > Non-Steam after extracting Re8.zip; force a recent Proton/GE-Proton in Compatibility.

ProtonDB: No official ProtonDB entry; tier expected gold/platinum since it's a vanilla GameMaker Windows export with no DRM.

Binary: Exact .exe name inside the zip is unconfirmed (likely Re8.exe).

Controller: Don't rely on native pad support — the itch.io page advertises an Xbox mapping but at least one user reported no controller (Xbox or PS4) registered, and the dev never confirmed it. Use a Steam Input keyboard layout (WASD/Space/K/L).

Length: Very short (~5-10 min).

Get the artwork

deckport never hosts game images. Open this game on SteamGridDB, pick the cover / hero / logo / icon you like, and drop them into the game folder under .deckport-art/ before you push it to the Deck. The importer files them under the right names automatically.

Run it on your Deck

Two files: the one-time importer (deckport.py) in your Deck's home folder, and this game's install helper. Copy the game into ~/Games and run the helper with Steam closed — it writes the recipe (binary, launch options, Proton version) and registers the shortcut with artwork.
