Sonic R - The Definitive Edition

Does it run on your Deck?

About

Sonic R is a 3D racing game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, originally released for the Sega Saturn in 1997 and ported to Microsoft Windows in 1998. Developed by Traveller's Tales with Sonic Team and published by Sega, it has characters race on foot across five large multi-route courses, with a focus on exploration and collecting items rather than vehicles. It is notable as the third racing entry in the series and for its distinctive vocal soundtrack by Richard Jacques.

This Definitive Edition setup is a community enhancement: the SRUpdater patcher upgrades the aging PC release to the rarer 2004 port and installs a mod loader / manager that restores compatibility on modern systems.

⚙ Setup notes

Overview: Sonic R (Traveller's Tales, 1997) run as a community-enhanced 'Definitive Edition'. The SRUpdater patcher takes any copy of the game and updates it to the much friendlier 2004 PC port, installing the Sonic R Mod Loader plus a few quality mods, and launches through the Sonic R Mod Manager.

Fix: The original 1998 autorun is a 16-bit executable that cannot run on 64-bit Windows, so the patcher / mod-loader path is required on modern systems and works well under Proton on Deck. The patched 2004 port also removes the need for the disc.

Proton: Force GE-Proton (GE-Proton9-27 confirmed).

Install: First launch from Steam will fail while it generates the prefix; run SonicRModManager.exe afterward to manage mods and graphics.

Display: In the mod manager graphics settings, uncheck Windowed and check Windowed Fullscreen, then set resolution to 1067x800 (4:3) or 1280x800 (16:10) for the Deck screen.

The one thing to know

Supply your own copy: Community enhancement of the Sonic R PC port. Never sold standalone on Steam, so no steam_appid.

Install: Launch via SonicRModManager.exe after forcing GE-Proton (GE-Proton9-27 confirmed by the community guide); first Steam launch fails to generate the prefix.

Controller: Gamepad is supported, but by default L3 (left-stick click) is mapped to Start — press it to open Options and rebind controls properly.

Display: Set Windowed Fullscreen at 1067x800 (4:3) or 1280x800 (16:10) in the mod manager.

Status: Test on hardware before marking working. deckport links nothing.

Community guides

Write-ups and threads from people who got this (or a similar) game running. deckport links to them — it doesn't reproduce them.

Get the artwork

deckport never hosts game images. Open this game on SteamGridDB, pick the cover / hero / logo / icon you like, and drop them into the game folder under .deckport-art/ before you push it to the Deck. The importer files them under the right names automatically.

Run it on your Deck

Two files: the one-time importer (deckport.py) in your Deck's home folder, and this game's install helper. Copy the game into ~/Games and run the helper with Steam closed — it writes the recipe (binary, launch options, Proton version) and registers the shortcut with artwork.
