About

Tony Hawk's Underground (THUG) is the fifth entry in Activision's Tony Hawk's series. It broke from earlier games by casting the player as a custom amateur skater in a full story mode with cutscenes and characters, rather than a roster of pros. The console versions were built by Neversoft on the engine that powered the Pro Skater games, with the Windows version handled by Beenox. It earned universal acclaim from critics, who singled out its narrative and deep create-a-skater tools, but it was never re-released digitally and is long out of print on PC.

โš™ Setup notes

2003 Neversoft skateboarding game.

Supply your own copy: Never re-released digitally, out of print.

Fix: The PARTYMOD patch (by PARTYMANX) is essential on Deck โ€” extract it into the game's game/ folder, then run partypatcher.exe ONCE to produce the patched THUGPM.exe, and launch that instead of the original exe. PARTYMOD replaces the input layer with a modern SDL2 system (controller support with PS2/Xbox/Gamecube glyphs), bypasses the original SafeDisc/modern-Windows compatibility problems, and adds custom resolutions plus configurable windowing โ€” this is what makes the raw PC port playable on Deck. (If you have an old dinput8.dll widescreen mod in the folder, delete it first.)

Config: Run partyconfig.exe first to set resolution/controls (1024x768 or higher works well).

Install: Add the patched THUGPM.exe to Steam as a non-Steam game, force GE-Proton (or proton_experimental) in compatibility.

Controller: Let the PARTYMOD SDL2 input layer handle the controller; a default Gamepad Steam Input layout is enough as fallback.

Series: THUG2 is Deck-confirmed via the same PARTYMOD route (separate partymod-thug2 patch), and THUG1 runs the same way.

The one thing to know

Supply your own copy: Out of print, never on Steam digitally (no appid); configuration only, no links.

PARTYMOD is required: Run partypatcher.exe once to make THUGPM.exe, then launch that under GE-Proton.

Controller: PARTYMOD's SDL2 input layer provides controller support (PS2/Xbox/Gamecube glyphs), so the gamepad works without a special hack (default Gamepad Steam Input layout as fallback).

Config: Set controls/resolution in partyconfig.exe before first launch.

Status: Community confirms THUG1/THUG2 run on Deck via this route, but not yet hands-on verified for this recipe.

Get the artwork

deckport never hosts game images. Open this game on SteamGridDB, pick the cover / hero / logo / icon you like, and drop them into the game folder under .deckport-art/ before you push it to the Deck. The importer files them under the right names automatically.

Run it on your Deck

Two files: the one-time importer (deckport.py) in your Deck's home folder, and this game's install helper. Copy the game into ~/Games and run the helper with Steam closed โ€” it writes the recipe (binary, launch options, Proton version) and registers the shortcut with artwork.
