About

Veloren is a free, open-source multiplayer voxel RPG written entirely in Rust and inspired by games like Cube World, Minecraft, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Development began in 2018 with the first public release in 2019, and the project continues with weekly releases driven by a large volunteer contributor community. Players explore a procedurally generated open world, combat creatures, craft gear, and adventure together on community-run servers. The Airshipper launcher keeps the client up to date and displays live server player counts. Performance on Steam Deck is generally good at medium settings.

⚙ Setup notes

Native Linux. No Proton needed.

Install: The recommended Deck install is the Airshipper launcher Flatpak (net.veloren.airshipper), available on Flathub and installable via Discover in Desktop Mode. Airshipper handles downloading and updating the game client (veloren-voxygen) automatically.

Alternative: Download Airshipper directly from veloren.net and run it as a non-Steam game pointing to the airshipper binary.

Controller: Veloren is keyboard/mouse-first and has no full native gamepad UI — you'll primarily use the Deck's trackpads/mouse emulation (the right d-pad toggles mouse control). Note the Flathub Airshipper Flatpak has a known controller-input permission limitation; the manual Airshipper download from veloren.net is the workaround for better controller behavior. See the official Deck notes for current quirks.

Display: The in-game UI is small at Deck resolution and there is no Steam Input virtual keyboard, so pairing a Bluetooth keyboard for initial account setup is helpful.

The one thing to know

Free, open-source game — no purchase needed.

Install: Use the Airshipper Flatpak (net.veloren.airshipper, Flathub) for the easiest Deck install.

Display: The UI is small at Deck's native resolution — consider increasing UI scale in settings.

Keyboard: No built-in virtual keyboard: use a Bluetooth keyboard or Steam's on-screen keyboard for initial character/account setup.

Controller: No full native gamepad support — Veloren is keyboard/mouse-first, so expect to use the Deck trackpads/mouse emulation (right d-pad toggles mouse control). The Flathub Airshipper Flatpak has a known controller-input permission limitation; if controller behavior is poor, use the manual Airshipper download from veloren.net instead.

Community guides

Write-ups and threads from people who got this (or a similar) game running. deckport links to them — it doesn't reproduce them.

Get the artwork

deckport never hosts game images. Open this game on SteamGridDB, pick the cover / hero / logo / icon you like, and drop them into the game folder under .deckport-art/ before you push it to the Deck. The importer files them under the right names automatically.

Run it on your Deck

Two files: the one-time importer (deckport.py) in your Deck's home folder, and this game's install helper. Copy the game into ~/Games and run the helper with Steam closed — it writes the recipe (binary, launch options) and registers the shortcut with artwork.
